Welcome to Home Is A Kitchen (formerly Man Fuel Food Blog) – a food blog about original recipes, restaurant reviews, and travel! I’m Youssef, but if that’s too hard for you to say, you can call me, “Sef,” or “Joe,” just like coffee baristas do when they can’t spell my name out on a paper cup. I appreciate you not only checking out the blog, but also checking out this page to learn a little bit more about the person writing it.
As a teen and while in college, I held down jobs in and related to the food service industry. After that, I worked as a lawyer for five years in and around the Boston, MA area before deciding to take a break from the law to pursue my love of food and a totally different career as a programmer. I know that’s weird, but I’m already doing it, so we’ll see what happens. My wife seems to be putting up with me so far, so I’ll take that as a good sign to keep on doing what I’m doing.
I’m also a second-generation American (first generation born in the U.S.) that grew up in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. During college, I started teaching myself to cook while living off-campus Junior year. Since then I’ve greatly enjoyed cooking while trying out all kinds of new and interesting foods at home or in restaurants. I know I’m good at eating, but I hope I’ve learned a few things in the kitchen as well.
As someone that has always tipped the scales a bit towards the heavy side, my recipes are geared towards hearty foods, but I try to provide calorie information when possible. Don’t get me wrong… I am not a dietitian and this is not a health blog. I don’t purport to know anything about what will make you thin nor do I advocate for any kind of dietary lifestyle (like omnivorism, vegetarianism, carnivorism, veganism, etc.).
Overall, I’m just hoping to share my food experiences with others whether it’s reviewing a restaurant, posting a recipe, or just commenting generally about the food world.

Hibiscus drink is called jamaica (ha-my-ka) in Spanish and can be found at Mexican restaurants, but it is usually very sweet – way too sweet for my taste. I started drinking it and making it while I lived in Cairo and the Egyptians do generally like it very sweet, but the woman who cleaned my flat made it for me the first time as a hot drink during the winter and she made it tart.
That’s what’s great about the drink! It satisfies those who like it sweet and those who like it tart! It’s awesome both ways.
